2 in China first known deaths from H7N9 bird flu

BEIJING (AP) ? Two Shanghai men have died from a lesser-known type of bird flu in the first known human deaths from the strain, and Chinese authorities said Sunday that it wasn't clear how they were infected, but that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission.

A third person, a woman in the nearby province of Anhui, also contracted the H7N9 strain of bird flu and was in critical condition, China's National Health and Family Planning Commission said in a report on its website.

There was no sign that any of the three, who were infected over the past two months, had contracted the disease from each other, and no sign of infection in the 88 people who had closest contact with them, the medical agency said.

H7N9 bird flu is considered a low pathogenic strain that cannot easily be contracted by humans. The overwhelming majority of human deaths from bird flu have been caused by the more virulent H5N1, which decimated poultry stocks across Asia in 2003.

The World Health Organization is "closely monitoring the situation" in China, regional agency spokesman Timothy O'Leary said in Manila.

"There is apparently no evidence of human-to-human transmission, and transmission of the virus appears to be inefficient, therefore the risk to public health would appear to be low," O'Leary said.

One of the two men from Shanghai, who was 87, became ill on Feb. 19 and died on Feb 27. The other man, 27, became ill on Feb. 27 and died on March 4, the Chinese health commission said. A 35-year-old woman in the Anhui city of Chuzhou became ill on March 9 and is being treated.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted tests and confirmed Saturday that all three cases were H7N9, the health commission said.

Scientists have been closely monitoring the H5N1 strain of the virus, fearing that it could mutate into a form that spreads easily among people, potentially sparking a pandemic. So far, most human cases have been connected to contact with infected birds.

PFT: Collin Klein thinks his draft stock's rising

ReichGetty Images

New Dolphins DT Vaugn Martin says he had offers from the Pats, Eagles, Chargers, Chiefs, and Seattle.

Former Bills QB Frank Reich will hold his annual Call to Courage Award Breakfast on April 6; this year?s event includes a 20-year look back at the greatest comeback in NFL history.

WR Danny Amendola will wear No. 16 with the Pats, if it?s available.? (For now, it isn?t.)

The Jets won?t be hosting the Honey Badger before the draft, a fact that typically has little bearing on whether the player will be picked by the team in question.

Ravens secondary coach Teryl Austin is upbeat about the teams defensive backfield.

The Bengals will now try to find a safety, via free agency or the draft.

The Browns have ?very mild interest? in free-agent WR Domenik Hixon.

Former Steelers OL John Wiley died this week at the age of 92.? (He played in the first publicly-televised college football game, which was broadcast in 1939 by NBC.)

Former Texans LB Connor Barwin took out a newspaper ad thanking a variety of folks who helped his career in Houston ? including Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert and ?my cleaning lady.?

Over the next couple of months, new Jaguars coach Gus Bradley will establish his vision for the team.

Colts QB Andrew Luck is among the candidates for the cover of an overhyped, underperforming football video game that inexplicably continues to sell millions of copies every year.

Someone actually believes that Ryan Fitzpatrick is an upgrade over Matthew Hasselbeck at backup quarterback for the Titans.

The Broncos hope to play as fast as possible on offense in 2013.

The Chiefs have explained the convoluted title of the man who once used the phrase ?programmatic non-fit? with a straight face.

Here?s a look at the Raiders? draft options with the third overall pick in 2013.

The agent for former Chargers LT Marcus McNeill says McNeill isn?t considering a comeback.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo talks about his new contract in a video that includes an image of Romo in front of a collection of trophies many think he?ll never touch and Romo?s young son rebuffing owner Jerry Jones? high-five attempt.

RB Tim Hightower?s workout with the Giants will occur early next week.

The Eagles reportedly have some lingering interest in OT Eric Winston.

The Redskins reportedly are eyeballing Miami CB Brandon McGee and Nevada safety Duke Williams.

The contract signed by new Bears OL Matt Slauson is worth more than the minimum salary.

Lions Hall of Famer Lem Barney has sued a former employer after he was fired for signing too many autographs.

CB Loyce Means, out of football in 2012, could be signed by the Packers early next week.

Should the Vikings focus on improving their front four?

The supposedly ultra-talented Falcons have a major hole at cornerback.

The effort to upgrade the Panthers? stadium with public money?continues to face opposition.

New Saints LB Victor Butler says that he was simply looking for a ?chance to compete and be a part of a winning team.?

How good will the Buccaneers? offensive line be in 2013, and beyond?

The Cardinals won?t be going to Flagstaff for training camp.

The Rams are ready to pull the plug on this year?s Pro Day circuit.

So who will be No. 2 on the depth chart behind Colin Kaepernick?

The Seahawks have put together 25 thinks to like about CB Richard Sherman on his 25th birthday.? (?Humility? is not on the list.)

93% The Sapphires

All Critics (101) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (94) | Rotten (7)

Let's trivialize a legacy of cruelty and denigration, in a country where indigenous people suffered from centuries of human rights abuse! And let's make the carnage of Vietnam look like a paintball game!

[A] genial, entertaining, clich?-ridden showbiz story from Australia.

"The Sapphires" illustrates how the same old story - in this case, the one about a 1960s girl group and its struggles - can be freshened up through the novelties of place and characterization.

A very conventional story of a '60s Australian girl group gains extra power from its context and setting in this fact-based story set to the beat of Motown soul.

The performers improve it, or save it, depending on your viewpoint.

"The Sapphires" is a bit like a puppy you're trying to house break. It may have its bad cinematic moments but it's just so darn appealing that you have to love it.

A rousing soundtrack helps to compensate for some of the historical embellishments in this Australian crowd-pleaser.

'Sapphires' got heart and soul

It might not possess the exuberant innocent fun of 'That Thing You Do!' or the overall brilliance of 'The Commitments' but 'The Sapphires' shines enough in its own right. (Complete Content Details for Parents also available)

If you love the music of Motown and enjoy a feel good success flick, then "The Sapphires" fits the bill.

Delirious surprises crowd out the clich?s in this thoroughly disarming movie.

Mauboy has one hell of a voice, and the Sapphires' vocal performances speak to the endless power of great soul songs.

Irresistibly feel good, sound good movie, wears hearts and social relevance on its sparkly sleeve. . .Fun and racial tolerance amidst war [with] sterling aborigine talent.

The most affable, innocuous outing ever set in a war zone.

With O'Dowd in the lead, and a hit-soundtrack-ready selection of tunes from the Stax and Motown catalogs and more, The Sapphires is popcorn entertainment, with some earned laughs and a genuine heart.

It helps that the leading actors are so skillful and appealing, beginning with Chris O'Dowd as a roguish Irishman who becomes the girls' manager...

You've seen this type of tale many times before...but the inspired-by-a-true-story Aboriginal slant adds interest, the actresses create unique characters and Chris O'Dowd really shines.

This familiar but supremely well-told and produced tale of the unlikely rise of an Aboriginal female pop group in the Vietnam War-era is feel-good entertainment at its best. Performances, solid script and great music all hit the high notes.

It sidesteps the usual cliches. Fame and fortune matter less than the human connections that are fostered and repaired on this unlikely journey.

Gabon jails activist for defaming ally of president

LIBREVILLE (Reuters) - A prominent environmental activist was sentenced to six months in prison for defamation in Gabon, his lawyer said on Friday, after he accused an ally of the president of secretly owning the local unit of commodities giant Olam International.

Marc Ona Essangui said during a television broadcast that President Ali Bongo's chief of staff, Liban Souleymane, controlled Olam Gabon, which is developing timber, palm oil and rubber projects in the tiny Central African nation.

Souleymane denied the allegation and brought a defamation case against him, which we won in a Libreville court.

"I regret this decision against my client, who was only fulfilling his role of a counterweight (to the government). I will consult with my client and possibly appeal this decision," Ona Essangui's lawyer Ruphin Nkoulou said.

The court also ordered Ona Essangui to pay a fine of 5 million CFA francs ($9,800). The state prosecutor had requested a one-year jail sentence.

During his first appearance in court on March 9, the wheelchair-bound activist said he did not regret making the accusation. "If I had it to do over again, I'd do the same thing," he said at the time.

Olam began operating in Gabon in 1999, establishing a logging operation. It later entered into a joint venture with the Gabonese state to develop plantations and palm oil mills with planned investments of around $236 million.

Gabonese environmental groups have for the past three years requested publication of the joint venture agreement without success.

Ona Essangui was jailed briefly in 2008 after calling for more transparency in the country's public management. ($1 = 510.8300 CFA francs)

Taking the US-bound Smart Electric Drive for a spin (video)

We take the USbound Smart Electric Drive for a test drive video

The eponymous "Smart car" has been buzzing around city streets in the US for over five years now. It's actually called the Fortwo, thanks to its limited seating capacity, and while it didn't prove to be an immediate hit, sales have been steadily increasing. An electric version of the car has been available in limited numbers overseas for years now, but finally this year it's coming to the US. And this is it. We got a chance to drive a green vinyl-wrapped Smart Electric Drive around some city streets ahead of the opening of the New York International Auto Show and came away reasonably impressed by this $25,000 EV -- the cheapest on the market. Join us after the break for our impressions.

Ashley Judd 'unable' to run for Senate

The actress won't attempt to take Senator Mitch McConnell's seat representing Kentucky in the U.S. Senate, according to a tweet published on Wednesday and confirmed by her publicist. McConnell's seat is one of 14 Republicans are defending in 2014.

Actress Ashley?Judd?announced Wednesday she won't run for U.S. Senate in Kentucky against Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, saying she had given serious thought to a campaign but decided her responsibilities and energy need to be focused on her family.

The former Kentucky resident tweeted her decision.

"Regretfully, I am currently unable to consider a campaign for the Senate. I have spoken to so many Kentuckians over these last few months who expressed their desire for a fighter for the people & new leader," Judd?wrote.

"While that won't be me at this time, I will continue to work as hard as I can to ensure the needs of Kentucky families are met by returning this Senate seat to whom it rightfully belongs: the people & their needs, dreams, and great potential. Thanks for even considering me as that person & know how much I love our Commonwealth. Thank you!"

Her publicist Cara Tripicchio confirmed?Judd's?decision.

The 44-year-old?Judd?had hinted last week that she was nearing a decision about the race.

Now living in suburban Nashville, Tenn.,?Judd?has said little publicly about her intentions. However, she has been meeting with several Democratic leaders, including Gov. Steve Beshear, to discuss a possible run.

Defeating McConnell would be the Democrats' biggest prize of the 2014 election. His seat is one of 14 that Republicans are defending while Democrats try to hold onto 21, hoping to retain or add to their 55-45 edge.

The star of such films as "Double Jeopardy" and "Kiss the Girls" is known for her liberal political views and she would have been running in a largely conservative state where Republicans hold both Senate seats and five of the six seats in the U.S. House.

Former State Treasurer Jonathan Miller, a?Judd?supporter, said she would have been a strong candidate.

"As a Kentuckian and someone who was really enthusiastic about her as a candidate, this wasn't the news I was hoping for," Miller said. "But as her friend, from the first time we talked about the race last summer, I was very candid about the grueling nature of politics. It's become a very unpleasant business and running against Mitch McConnell would be an extraordinarily difficult and grueling experience."

McConnell, who spent some $20 million on his last election and who has already raised $10 million for the next one, had already been taunting would-be Democratic challengers in a comical online video intended to raise second thoughts about taking on a politician known as brawler. The video plays on the fact that?Judd?lives in Tennessee.

Republican-leaning group American Crossroads in its own online video also plays on the Tennessee angle and ties her closely to President Barack Obama, who is unpopular in Kentucky.

University of Louisville political scientist Laurie Rhodebeck said?Judd?certainly wasn't frightened out of the race.

"She doesn't strike me as a shrinking violet," Rhodebeck said. "I think the real issue would be how much disruption she wanted in her life. This was the kind of thing that she would have to throw herself into 100 percent in order to make it worthwhile."

Judd?and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti separated early this year after marrying in his native Scotland in 2001.

Judd's?decision not to enter the race leaves the Democratic Party in search of a candidate. Many of Kentucky's top Democrats, including Beshear, have said they won't run. However, a rising star within the party, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, hasn't ruled the race out. Grimes declined comment Wednesday evening through her spokeswoman, Lynn Sowards Zellen.

Associated Press writer Janet Cappiello contributed to this report.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Offer Research Grant To ... - Shape

One of the main reasons guys dislike using condoms? decreased pleasure?could be solved thanks to (get ready for this) Bill Gates.

That?s right, the tech guru and philanthropist is challenging someone to come up with a rubber that still protects against STIs yet maintains or even increases pleasure. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is offering a $100,000 grant, with the possibility of $1 million, to anyone who can successfully tackle the challenge.

While it would be sweet to think that Gates was most concerned with enhancing our between-the-sheets sessions, there is a larger goal here: to diminish the prevalence of HIV. The foundation has found that the main deterrent to wrapping it up is not a lack of resources but rather a lack of incentive.

Given that the little rubbers have the power to prevent STIs, HIV, and pregnancy and have no associated adverse events (which is more than any other form of BC can boast), what's not to love?

Cultural stigma and decreased pleasure and intimacy are the main reasons people forgo love gloves, the foundation says. "The primary drawback from the male perspective is that condoms decrease pleasure as compared to no condom, creating a trade-off that many men find unacceptable, particularly given that the decisions about use must be made just prior to intercourse," reads a post on the foundation's blog "Inpatient Optimists."

RELATED: Make your time in the bedroom even more enjoyable with these seven tips for a better orgasm!

But ladies, don't point the finger at men: Women are also loose with their condom use, as reported in a study from Stanford Medical Center last year that found that women have a tendency to stop condom use once they start hormonal contraceptives.

Aside from the related worldwide health risks, the condom is also long overdue for an upgrade. In the past 50 years, we've seen multitudes of technological advancements, but besides implementing latex and allowing for individual product testing, condoms have hardly changed, the foundation points out.

We'd say it's time to revamp the rubber. And stat.

ModernMix is a $5 program that lets you run Metrostyle apps in desktopstyle windows

Sometimes you just wanna close a window. Or resize it, or drag it so that it overlaps with something else. That's how Windows works, and it's more or less how you'd expect to interact with Windows 8 in particular. The problem is, those old-world rules don't necessarily apply to newer Metro-style apps: yes, you can snap them in place next to traditional x86 programs, but you can't resize those windows, nor can you arrange them so that they overlap with each other.

Fortunately for you multitaskers out there, Stardock's new app ModernMix squeezes all your Metro programs into traditional desktop windows -- ones you can resize, minimize, drag around and even close completely. The app also lets you pin Metro apps to the Taskbar on the desktop, as well as run them at full-screen when the mood strikes. It's priced at $5, but Stardock is offering a 30-day free trial to folks who prefer to try before they buy. Just remember: you'll need Windows 8, not RT. Not that you RT users are spending much time in the desktop anyway.

Common gene variants explain 42% of antidepressant response

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Antidepressants are commonly prescribed for the treatment of depression, but many individuals do not experience symptom relief from treatment. The National Institute of Mental Health's STAR*D study, the largest and longest study ever conducted to evaluate depression treatment, found that only approximately one-third of patients responded within their initial medication trial and approximately one-third of patients did not have an adequate clinical response after being treated with several different medications. Thus, identifying predictors of antidepressant response could help to guide the treatment of this disorder.

A new study published in Biological Psychiatry now shares progress in identifying genomic predictors of antidepressant response.

Many previous studies have searched for genetic markers that may predict antidepressant response, but have done so despite not knowing the contribution of genetic factors. Dr. Katherine Tansey of Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London and colleagues resolved to answer that question.

"Our study quantified, for the first time, how much is response to antidepressant medication influenced by an individual's genetic make-up," said Tansey.

To perform this work, the researchers estimated the magnitude of the influence of common genetic variants on antidepressant response using a sample of 2,799 antidepressant-treated subjects with major depressive disorder and genome-wide genotyping data.

They found that genetic variants explain 42% of individual differences, and therefore, significantly influence antidepressant response.

"While we know that there are no genetic markers with strong effect, this means that there are many genetic markers involved. While each specific genetic marker may have a small effect, they may add up to make a meaningful prediction," Tansey added.

"We have a very long way to go to identify genetic markers that can usefully guide the treatment of depression. There are two critical challenges to this process," said Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry. "First, we need to have genomic markers that strongly predict response or non-response to available treatments. Second, markers for non-response to available treatments also need to predict response to an alternative treatment. Both of these conditions need to be present for markers of non-response to guide personalized treatments of depression."

"Although the Tansey et al. study represents progress, it is clear that we face enormous challenges with regards to both objectives," he added. "For example, it does not yet appear that having a less favorable genomic profile is a sufficiently strong negative predictor of response to justify withholding antidepressant treatment. Similarly, there is lack of clarity as to how to optimally treat patients who might have less favorable genomic profile.."

Additional research is certainly required, but scientists hope that one day, results such as these can lead to personalized treatment for depression.

Venus vortices go for chaotic multi-storey strolls around the poles

Mar. 24, 2013 ? A detailed study of Venus' South Polar Vortex shows a much more chaotic and unpredictable cyclone than previously thought. The analysis reveals that the center of rotation of the vortex wanders around the pole differently at different altitude levels in the clouds of Venus. In its stroll around the Pole, in layers separated by 20 km, the vortex experiences unpredictable changes in its morphology.

The results of this study are published online in Nature Geoscience today.

The study, entitled 'A chaotic long-lived vortex at the southern pole of Venus', used infrared images from VIRTIS instrument onboard the European Space Agency's Venus Express spacecraft. VIRTIS provides spectral images at different levels of the atmosphere and allows the observation of the lower and upper clouds of Venus.

Atmospheric vortices are common in the atmospheres of different planets of the Solar System, although they have different behaviors. Venus is a planet similar to Earth in size, but very different in other aspects. It rotates slowly around its axis, with a day on Venus lasting 243 Earth-days, and it spins in the opposite direction to Earth. Its dense carbon dioxide atmosphere, with surface pressures of 90 times that of Earth, causes a runaway greenhouse effect that raises the surface temperatures up to 450?C. Between 45 and 70km above the surface there is a dense layer of sulfuric acid clouds that completely covers the planet and moves at speeds of 360km/h in a phenomenon named superrotation, where the atmosphere rotates much faster than the surface of the planet. The origin of this effect is still unknown.

At the poles of Venus, the atmospheric circulation forms intense and permanent vortices that change shape and size on a daily basis. In the new analysis published today, researchers report that the winds in the vortex, which were tracked by studying images obtained by the Venus Express orbiter, change chaotically from day-to-day. This unpredictable nature of the Venus polar vortices make them different from polar vortices found on other planets, like Earth or Saturn, which are much more stable and predictable.

The large-scale cyclone extends vertically in Venus' atmosphere over more than 20 kilometers, through a region of highly turbulent, permanent clouds. However, the centers of rotation at two different altitude levels (42 and 62 km above the surface) are not aligned and both wander around the south pole of the planet with no established pattern at velocities of up to 55km/h. The study also finds that even when averaged cross-winds are roughly the same at both altitudes, there is still a strong vertical gradient, with winds increasing by as much as 3km/h for every kilometer of height and leading to possible atmospheric instabilities.

The vortices are fed by the atmospheric superrotation and are trapped in polar regions by a wide, shallow collar of cold air in subpolar latitudes. The eye at the centre of the vortex covers an average area of 2200 kilometres by 1400 kilometres. Despite several years of observations, it is not possible to explain why the vortex is variable enough to alter its shape in just one day, or remain stable for weeks. Thus, along with the origin of the superrotation of the atmosphere, identification of a mysterious source of ultraviolet absorption in the clouds, Venus polar vortices are one of the great mysteries of our twin planet. This study will help for a more precise explanation of the vortex and its relationship with the atmospheric superrotation.

North Korean leader Kim sings military's praises, oungum-style

SEOUL (Reuters) - Forget "Hail to the Chief". In North Korea, the army sing their leader's praises with a chorus of "We Will Defend General Kim Jong-un at the Cost of Our Lives", or the catchy accordion and tap-dance tune, "The Naval Port in the Evening".

Kim, the third of his line to rule North Korea, praised musical instruments made by the North's 1.2 million-strong army on Sunday, state news agency KCNA reported.

Tensions have risen on the Korean peninsula since new U.N. sanctions were imposed after the North carried out its third nuclear test in February. Pyongyang has threatened to destroy the United States with nuclear weapons, bomb its Pacific bases and shell South Korea in response.

Putting aside rising rhetoric, Kim inspected guitars and drums made by the army and said it was important to make quality instruments so soldiers could "spend their worthwhile days in the army full of militant optimism and joy", KCNA said.

Kim, "Supreme Commander" of the North's armed forces, also inspected overcoats for pupils at the country's top military schools and suggested style improvements, KCNA reported.

According to independent observers, North Korea's huge military, believed to be the world's fourth largest, spend most of their time in activities such as manufacturing or fishing for crabs because drills are far too expensive for the impoverished country and they need to feed themselves.

Kim's field guidance follows the example set by his late father, Kim Jong-il, who gave advice to factories and farmers as well as the army.

Kim Jong-un, 30, still has some way to go in emulating his father's reported accomplishments.

His father's feats, according to KCNA, included inventing the oungum, a banjo-like musical instrument that is "widely popular" in North Korea, and scoring 11 holes-in-one in a single round of golf.

PROMISES, PROMISES: Climate Change

The issue:

Slowing the buildup of greenhouse gases responsible for warming the planet is one of the biggest challenges the United States and President Barack Obama face. The effects of rising global temperatures are widespread and costly: more severe storms, rising seas, species extinctions, and changes in weather patterns that will alter food production and the spread of disease.

Politically, the stakes are huge.

Any policy to reduce heat-trapping pollution will inevitably target the main sources of Americans' energy: the coal burned by power plants for electricity and the oil that is refined to run automobiles.

Those industries have powerful protectors in both parties in Congress who will fight any additional regulations handed down by the administration that could contribute to Americans paying more for electricity and gas at the pump. There's also the lingering question of how much the U.S. can do to solve the problem alone, without other countries taking aggressive steps to curb their own pollution.

The promise:

"My plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet, because climate change is not a hoax. More droughts and floods and wildfires are not a joke." ? Obama at the Democratic National Convention, Sept. 6, 2012.

"I urge this Congress to pursue a bipartisan, market-based solution to climate change. ... But if Congress won't act soon to protect future generations, I will. I will direct my Cabinet to come up with executive actions we can take, now and in the future, to reduce pollution, prepare our communities for the consequences of climate change, and speed the transition to more sustainable sources of energy." ? Obama in his State of the Union speech, Feb. 12, 2013.

The prospects:

Obama has shown he doesn't need Congress to take action against climate change.

In his first term, he struck a deal with automakers to double fuel economy standards. After failing to pass a climate bill through a Democratic-controlled Congress, he proposed rules to control heat-trapping pollution from future power plants.

His chances of going through Congress are no better the second time around.

While some liberal Democrats have proposed legislation to tax emissions of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, Republicans controlling the House have pledged to block any and all efforts to price carbon pollution. Democrats from states with coal and oil probably will be stumbling blocks.

Obama has more tools he can tap to deal with the problem. The big question is how aggressive he will be and how he will balance expanding domestic energy production with his climate goals.

On the one hand, he says he supports an "all of the above" energy plan that uses all of the nation's energy resources. But should he proceed with regulations to control pollution from existing coal-fired power plants, the single largest source of carbon pollution, those regulations probably will contribute to shuttering facilities already struggling to compete with cheap natural gas.

Also looming is a decision whether to grant a permit to the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would transport carbon-laden tar sands oil from Canada to Texas.

While the pipeline project is a better alternative from a carbon pollution standpoint than shipping the oil by rail, the emissions created by harvesting tar sands, processing them into oil and eventually burning it in automobiles in the U.S. and abroad will contribute to global warming.

Obama also backs the natural gas drilling boom brought about by hydraulic fracturing, but that boom is also responsible for releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Bottom line: Obama is likely to take more steps to reduce the pollution blamed for climate change. But those actions probably will not be of the scale needed to help much in slowing the heating of the planet.

The Carnegie School of Home Economics ... - Kaieteur News

?

?

The Carnegie School of Home Economics as it is now known was essentially birthed in the 19th century when several institutions were set up to educate the younger generation, primarily women. It was formerly known as

Principal Penelope Harris

the Carnegie Trade School.
History tells us that the Carnegie School of Home Economics was founded by a Scotsman Andrew Carnegie through the Trade Centres for Women of New York, and the main purpose at that time was to have persons who were not academically inclined, trained in various skills and disciplines.
According to facts from a recently published magazine to celebrate Carnegie?s 80th anniversary, a committee spearheaded by Major W. Bain Gray, Ph.D, the then Director of Education, opined that there should be a programme of study which included domestic courses such as Needlework, Cookery, Laundry and Housekeeping for young girls. This recommendation saw the institution being set up to facilitate training. Funding was the responsibility of the Carnegie Board of Trustees and later the United Kingdom Trust Funds.
The first Principal, a British born, Ms. Beatrix Briant, was appointed to administer the operations of the institution and was tasked with ensuring that the venture was a success. The Government made a commitment to assume full financial responsibilities if this were realized. Thanks to her effective management and zeal, government made good on their promise and assumed full responsibility for the school in 1973.
Other principals who bore this mantle were Misses Blackmore and Gunn, both British born, followed by locals Lucille Fraser-Wharton, Magda Pollard, Lynnette Sylvester, Aulene Kilkelly, Roxanne Benjamin-Hoppie, Norma Washington and presently mandated with this task is Mrs. Penelope Harris, whose vision is to broaden the school?s horizon by extending the facilities to the Caribbean and further afield by having the programmes accredited.
During the period 1937 ? 1958, the Carnegie Trade School, inclusive of training, made a decision to commercialize its operations by producing custom made ladies? garments and uniforms for the Government Sector employees. Large scale catering was also undertaken on request. In 1957 the name Trade School for Women was really a misnomer since male cooks, mess men and stewards for local coastal shipping may be trained here by request. Thus the name of the school was changed to the ?Carnegie School of Home Economics?.

The Founder, Andrew Carnegie

The school also initiated a Home Economics Emergency Training Programme for teachers. Persons were drawn from the three counties ? Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice.
Subject to the name change, Carnegie was officially linked to the Ministry of Education. The subject of Domestic Science had been introduced into the curriculum at Orange Walk in Georgetown, Bartica, New Amsterdam, and the department of various Schools in the three counties.
In September 1958, trading at this institution was discontinued. The curriculum was further enhanced with the addition of subjects such as Arithmetic, English, Social Studies, Geography, Art and Craft, Home Management, Food and Nutrition and to a large extent Clothing and Textiles. This was aimed at giving every girl an opportunity to learn all the skills and attitudes necessary for a good home, family and community life.
As a consequence, students at the Government Training College for Teachers received some training for delivering the Domestic Science programme to students, centered largely around the Food Preparation Curriculum. The Principal and Deputy Principal, Misses Kathleen Gunn and Lucille Fraser-Wharton, respectively, were the facilitators and Misses Cicely Phillips and Olga Britton were the tutors. This training was later extended to include persons from both public and private institutions and private citizens. However, the main target groups were students on a full time and later a part time basis. There were some 650 people including men in village groups enjoying this facility.
In 1971, the Carnegie School of Home Economics formalized its Catering Service to give more specialized training in food preparation and service. The public was afforded an opportunity to receive economical and healthy meals of a high standard in a pleasing atmosphere in the training restaurant now called, The Hibiscus Restaurant. Financial and technical assistance were afforded by The Association of Canadian Community College (ACCC) and the Canadian International Development Association (CIDA) to enhance the programme. Until now, Carnegie has continued training in this regard as the institution strives to uphold its motto ?We strive for better homes? by providing quality goods and services to all.
In September 2007, the Carnegie School of Home Economics and the Craft Production and Design Division came under one Board of Governors. The Carnegie School of Home Economics had been sharing a few facilities with the Craft Production and Design Division. That unit is currently in the building that is situated at the back of Carnegie School and originally served as the residence of the first principal.

Students in the Catering Department.

The Craft Institution was established on January 1, 1978 and evolved from the Community Development Division under the Ministry of Co-operatives headed by Desmond Hoyte, S.C., as Minister. Over the years, this Division was sustained by funds provided by Central Government and its own resources through a Revolving Fund. Today this division is solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. The main objective of the Craft Production and Design is to promote and develop an effective and viable Craft Industry as a meaningful contribution to the economy.
Between 2008 and 2013, Carnegie continued to embrace changes and rose to the challenges of Guyana?s communities. The classroom has been about improving the student?s awareness of values, attitudes and skills needed for individuals, families, communities and generally industries. It has been pointed out that the issues of ?time tested values, purpose and a sense of valuing one?s self and that of others? have posed a major challenge in the classroom.
In 2012, there was a shift towards modernizing all the programmes. In this regard, the institution now offers the certificate in Commercial Food preparation and General Cosmetology. It also offers part time courses in interior decoration.
Today, the Carnegie School of Home Economics stands alone as the leading training institution in the Catering and Hospitality Industry in Guyana, effectively training students in Food Preparation and Service. In addition, the students receive training in Food Science, Hotel Management, Marketing and Customer Service, and Front Desk Management, to name a few. The entity also strives to create a student-friendly environment where the priority is to the students, who will in turn deliver quality goods and service as they strive to uphold the motto ?We strive for better homes?.
Having celebrated 80 years of providing second chances to persons who are desirous of improving their quality of life, the Carnegie School of Home Economics continues to be the leading technical and vocational institution in the areas of Culinary Arts, Craft Production, Garment Construction and Cosmetology.
Fulfilling its mandate to the many communities which it serves with honour, the school is always open to continuously upgrading the economic power of not only young ladies, some of whom were not able to complete the formal learning at secondary institutions, but also to a surprisingly wide cross section of young men who are eagerly trying to develop themselves in the hospitality industry in Guyana and the rest of the world.

The building which houses the Carnegie School of Home Economics.

Today sitting at the helm of this facility is Mrs. Penelope Harris, the Principal, who has held this post since January 2007. She started as an associate lecturer at the institution in 1994.
Ironically Mrs. Harris?s mother, Mrs. Agatha Hinds, dedicated many years and made significant contributions to the Carnegie School of Home Economics. Now after eight decades of being in existence not much has changed, as a matter of fact there has been significant development of which the current Head now boasts.
According to Mrs. Harris, the school today caters for the needs of learners of a number of age ranges. It provides certification on the level of diplomas and certificates that are accredited by the Ministry of Education?s Accreditation Council.
?The staff of Carnegie School of Home Economics aspires to increase the school?s standards by continuously seeking to upgrade our facilities and programmes to regional and international standards,? Mrs. Harris asserts.
One such major upgrade [to the institution] is the transformation of its programmes into Competency Based Programmes that offer the student certification based on their proficiency within a variety of skill areas. This form of training is a relatively new one to the Caribbean and offers to students learning or acquisition of skills according to their own mental or intellectual pace.
The required end result of the acquisition of skills is certification. Another area of focus for the near future includes the development of skills training at the University of Guyana Tain, Berbice Campus, as well as skills training in the Region Two and Region Nine (Lethem) communities. The Prinicpal?s vision for the Lethem community is one she would like to see off the ground in the very near future, as she emphasized that the community is rapidly growing and has a lot of potential, given its proximity to Brazil.
Speaking of what the school still offers 80 years later, Mrs. Harris said it does not differ from when it first began. Currently, Carnegie offers full-time programmes in Catering and Hospitality, Commercial Food Preparation, Visual Arts, General Cosmetology, Garment Construction and Interior Decoration.
The duration of all full-time programmes ranges between one and two years.
The Catering and Hospitality Programme is designed to cater for adult learners in two major areas; Food and Beverage Service and Food Preparation. The Food Preparation unit is subdivided into BakeShop/Garde Manager and the Hot Meat section. Students complete each area within a six-month period, after which they move on to a new area of study.
Successful completion of the three semesters gives way to attachment within the industry. Students are sent to major hospitality businesses in Guyana to acquire first-hand knowledge and experience in the field. This allows the students to develop a hands-on approach to their work. The successful completion of both in-class training and industry training leads to certification with a Diploma in Catering and Hospitality.
Very soon with the growing demands in the hospitality sector, the school will be placing a lot of emphasis in this area.
So, if you?re thinking of a way to improve the general quality of life or that of your loved one, being a part of the Carnegie School of Home Economics is an option you should consider as it not only equips you with a trade that will see you earning a little extra income, but it can also be a trade that will see brighter smiles on the faces of your loved one at meal time.

The Social Media Guide to Ruining Your Relationship

The Social Media Guide to Ruining Your Relationship Everything that's allegedly great about communication for humans is terrible for romance, AKA, will we ever HEAR the lolz again? It was inevitable that, as mouth people, we'd create ways to get our message out in as few grunts as possible, and while this has been a boon for general humanity, it has left modern lovers in an impossible struggle between access and restraint, helplessly pitting that delicate balance of mystery so crucial to passion against our horrible, insatiable need to find out every single detail about our beloved right down to his fantasy baseball league choices from 2007. To say nothing of the fact that nearly everyone knows someone whose online behavior has gotten them into some kind of trouble. But among various forms of social media, is there a more treacherous taint to your hard-won harmony? Let's suss.

The Medium: Twitter

The Message: Anything you can say in 140 characters, sucka!

The Warning: Since Twitter is built for finding and interacting with complete strangers, famous people and complete twats, it feels less connected to the ins and outs of your personal romance. However, like any virtual collection of possible people one could ever sleep with, virtually or otherwise, it may as well be another digital bar with free booze. So it's possible to start a romance, end one, vibe the fuck out of someone or monitor your loved ones online via their Twitter activity.

The Risk: 1 out of 5. Sure, you could fight over the fact that your significant other isn't RT'ing you enough and favorites everything Rashida Jones ever says, but that's just dumb. It's hard to get much shadiness going on with such a built-in brevity and transparency. You're more likely to have your own breakup live-tweeted by someone else, like what the infamous Burger King breakup. (Bonus sadpoints: Both of them thought the other person was cheating because of MUTUALLY MISSED PHONE CALLS.)

The Medium: Email

The Message: Emails can be saved forever. Uh, yikes? In the form of love letters to your significant other, it's like a digital firebox of all the good stuff you ever said to each other. It's also going to include all the emailed fights, so get ready for that Cringe-Fest 2000. All of the above can make for a depressing postmortem in the event you ever break up (and you will break up).

The Warning: RIP, handwritten love letters. Also, since people often have email accounts for a very long time, it's a treasure trove of your activities for good and ill over what could be decades of your life. Past relationships, job seeking, bad email forwarding habits, fringe listservs ? anyone who stumbles onto this cache and decides to prowl is highly likely to leave that pain cave with at least a few questions. Sure, it's password protected, and yet, everyone eventually forgets to log out of their email account. Nearly every woman I know has seen the email of her significant other (some studies say 1 in 10 people have done this). Some even know the passwords and check in regularly, often for extended periods of time, to simply monitor the activities of their partner or find out what he or she really wants for Christmas (kidding).

The Risk: 2 out of 5. Having an email account is de rigueur, and not innately problematic. If you're not up to anything, there's nothing to find. If you're honest, there's nothing here that should contradict that. But if you're into lying, email is just one more avenue for your secret shady antics, and it could really undo you.

The Medium: Texting/IM'ing

The Message: Flirting, sexting, date planning ? the possibilities are limited only by how much time you have to devote to the art of instant, sexy, silent lolz. If your relationship is good, this is just one more way to keep in touch with someone, to let them know you're thinking about them, share funny jokes and secret pictures of your most despised colleague. If it's bad, it's another avenue for the shitty shit to get shittier. Regardless, both present the fun opportunity to misconstrue the dick out of everything the other person says.

The Warning: It's all just a little too easy, ya know? Is a texted kiss as good as a real one? Is a texted 'I'm sorry' supposed to make up for that bullshit with the dishwasher the other day? At worst, it's lazy, and sometimes it's just down right rude. To say nothing of the fact that because it's so easy and quick, anyone who doesn't respond to texts immediately draws suspicion for being off the digital leash for too long. Also, people stupidly think it actually replaces real talking or, in opposite land, "doesn't count" - a quarter of the respondents in one study said they flirted with someone other than partner via text. And of course, to say nothing of what it would be like to actually end the relationship via text. Says a woman who was rudely dumped over text: The text is the pygmy of communication methods. It's a Post-it note, a P.S. It's minimum investment, minimum effort. It's often cowardly ? a way to avoid face-to-face contact."

The Risk: 3 out of 5. Whether you're phoning it in, chatting up someone else, or not responding enough or at all, the risk is high that texting or chatting at some point or another is going to get you into trouble.

The Medium: Facebook

The Message: Jealous much? Because everyone you and your partner have ever known, thought about, wanted to know, slept with or thought about sleeping with, from your high school boyfriend to the chick he worked with for one month at the library junior year, is right there online now in a virtual library of people for you to reconnect with, get to know or avoid sleeping with.

The Warning: No matter the status of your actual in-person romance, Facebook, AKA "the mystery killer" is its public-facing representative. It is proof positive (or negative) of how your relationship is allegedly going. Did you "like" your partner's statuses enough? Did you friend that gargoyle you used to hook up with? Are you FB-messaging your ex-boyfriend? People are crazy-weird about Facebook because it's your cultivated brand, and if a partner won't even participate in cultivating the brand of your relationship together - now easily viewable by a handy vomitorious link - then how can you count on them to put the work in? And the casual cruelty of the whole Facebook breakup thing is. Just. Brutal.

The Risk: 4 out of 5. Facebook is so transparent and so contrived, and yet, just enough out of your control, what with how other people can constantly attempt to pop in and out of your life in the form of friend requests, comments, likes, shares, too much flirtation, etc., and it's a veritable landmine of opportunities to fuck it up. If you're in a relationship, something, somewhere on Facebook has happened that has sparked an unpleasant discussion, or worse. Divorce lawyers say Facebook in particular is a goldmine of information for divorce proceedings, as this handy infograph explains.

The Medium: Netflix/TV

The Message: If you're in a couple and you live together, sitting down together at night once the work is done or the kids are put to bed and finding something to watch on Netflix or TV is pretty much how we do it in Carb-Friendly, Get-to-Sitting America.

The Warning: People who watch a lot of TV are allegedly at risk for romance problems in the first place because it means you probably buy into a bunch of bullshit about how relationships actually work. Or more specifically, you're "less committed" to relationships, probably because you've been primed on the idea of a veritable buffet of options since commercial break one. Hey, don't get mad at me! It's a study. More hilariously, Netflix's streaming binge-watching capability, and the ability to secretly "watch ahead" of your significant other on season 2 of Melrose Place presents a fresh opportunity to grab a hammer and go ahead and slam the first ceremonious crack in the relationship glass, as beautifully, hilariously documented in this favor to humanity written by Maureen O'Connor over at The Cut.

The Risk: 5 out of 5. It may seem innocent to skip ahead of your significant other on House of Cards, but sooner than later you'll realize that the real House of Cards is your fragile relationship, the one so dishonest, so forced, so full of deceipt and shadiness that you can't even wait the one extra day to finish Alias. And you call yourself faithful.

The question, then, isn't IF Netflix streaming ? the marshmallow test of modern romance ? will tear us apart, it's WHEN. Consider yourself paused.

Death toll rises to 20 in Myanmar religious riots

MEIKHTILA, Myanmar (AP) ? Burning fires from two days of Buddhist-Muslim violence that killed at least 20 people smoldered across a central Myanmar town Friday as residents cowered indoors amid growing fears the country's latest bout of sectarian bloodshed could spread.

The government's struggle to contain the unrest in Meikhtila is proving another major challenge President Thein Sein's reformist administration as it attempts to chart a path to democracy after nearly half a century of military rule that once crushed all dissent.

The scenes in Meikhtila, where homes and at least five mosques have been torched by angry mobs, were ominously reminiscent of the sectarian violence between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya that shook western Rakhine state last year, killing hundreds of people and driving more than 100,000 from their homes.

The clashes in Meikhtila ? which was tense but calm Friday ? are the first reported in central Myanmar since then.

Troubles began Wednesday after an argument broke out between a Muslim gold shop owner and his Buddhist customers. A Buddhist monk was among the first killed, inflaming tensions that led a Buddhist mob to rampage through a Muslim neighborhood.

Violence continued Thursday, and by Friday, Win Htein, a local lawmaker from the opposition National League for Democracy, said he had counted at least 20 bodies. He said 1,200 Muslim families ? at least 6,000 people ? have fled their homes and taken refuge at a stadium and a police station.

On Friday, police seized knives, swords, hammers and sticks from young men in the streets and detained scores of looters.

Fires set to Muslim homes continued to burn, but angry Buddhist residents and monks prevented authorities from putting out the blazes.

It was difficult to determine the extent of destruction in the town because residents were too afraid to walk the streets and were sheltering in monasteries or other locations away from the violence.

"We don't feel safe and we have now moved inside a monastery," said Sein Shwe, a shop owner. "The situation is unpredictable and dangerous."

Some monks accosted and threatened journalists trying to cover the unrest, at one point trying to drag a group of several out of a van. One monk, whose faced was covered, shoved a foot-long dagger at the neck of an Associated Press photographer and demanded his camera. The photographer defused the situation by handing over his camera's memory card.

The group of nine journalists took refuge in a monastery and stayed there until a police unit was able to escort them to safety.

The U.N. secretary-general's special adviser to Myanmar, Vijay Nambiar, issued a statement expressing "deep sorrow at the tragic loss of lives and destruction."

He said religious and community leaders to must "publicly call on their followers to abjure violence, respect the law and promote peace."

The U.S. ambassador to Myanmar, Derek Mitchell, also said he was "deeply concerned about reports of violence and widespread property damage in Meikhtila."

Meikhtila is about 550 kilometers (340 miles) north of the main city of Yangon with a population of about 100,000 people, of which about a third are Muslims, Win Htein said. He said before this week's violence, the community had 17 mosques.

There was no apparent direct connection between the Meikhtila violence and that last year in Rakhine state. Rakhine Buddhists allege that Rohingya are mostly illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh. The Muslim population of Meikhtila is believed to be mostly of Indian origin, and although religious tensions are longstanding, the incident sparking the violence seemed to be a small and isolated dispute.

Occasional isolated violence involving Myanmar's majority Buddhist and minority Muslim communities has occurred for decades.

Under the military governments that ruled Myanmar from 1962 until 2011, ethnic and religious unrest was typically hushed up, an approach made easier in pre-Internet days, when there was a state monopoly on daily newspapers, radio and television, backed by tough censorship of other media.

But since an elected, though still military-backed, government took power in 2011, people have been using the Internet and social media in increasing numbers, and the press has been unshackled, with censorship mostly dropped and privately owned daily newspapers expected to hit the streets in the next few months.

The government of Thein Sein is constrained from using open force to quell unrest because it needs foreign approval in order to woo aid and investment. The previous military junta had no such compunctions about using force, and was ostracized by the international community for its human rights abuses.
