More than 16,000 apply for 450 jobs at US Airways

Jim Poulin/Phoenix Business Journal

US Airways is looking to hire 450 flight attendants.?

Need more evidence the battered and bruised job market is not quite out of the woods and there are still scores of applicants for many jobs?

Bloomberg has a story today that Tempe-based US Airways Group Inc. (NYSE: LCC) has received 16,500 applications for 450 flight attendant vacancies.

That follows up on Delta Air Lines getting 22,000 applications for 300 openings.

US Airways, which could merge with American Airlines, is especially interested in flight attendants with foreign language skills, in particular Portuguese and Hebrew. Those attendants would work international flights to Brazil and Israel.

The good news is that those airlines are hiring, and recession-subdued business and leisure travel could finally be rebounding.

The sobering news is there are scores of workers in the U.S. and Arizona looking for work, underemployed or looking for a new job after suffering through the recession.
