Pewaukee woman to help rescue pets along Gulf Coast

MILWAUKEE ?

It's not just people being rescued in the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac -- pets are also a big concern.

A Pewaukee woman is making it her mission to save cats and dogs in the Gulf Coast.

Caryn Buege made a brief stop in Milwaukee on Friday morning to talk only to WISN 12 News reporter Hillary Mintz. Then she left for a 16-hour drive south to New Orleans to help rescue stranded dogs and cats.

"I'll start in New Orleans. I'll have a team down there already on the ground, and we'll start to rescue out of Plaquemines Parish," Buege said.

This is not her first trip to the area. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Buege said she helped save more than 135 cats and dogs.

"It's always been one of those things I've always had a passion for, and I've done rescue for many, many years, and just very tied to the community now after Katrina," Buege said.

Buege said her experience will come in handy, but also said she couldn't do this without help from the community, which is where most of her supplies came from.

"Had sent an email and a Facebook post out and told people they could leave it in front of my garage door, so I had a heaping mound in front of the garage door, so yeah, it was great. It was exciting," Buege said.

Now that she's got the supplies, Buege said she's ready for the journey and possibly challenges that lie ahead.

Buege's only staying for a few days and will then go back down next week to join a larger rescue team.
