US-based grocery store chain SuperValu plans to reduce store-level workforce by an estimated 2,200-2,500 positions at its subsidiary, Albertsons.

The job cuts will occur across all 247 Albertsons stores in California and Nevada starting from the week of 17 June. These reductions are expected to be completed by 1 July.

Retail chain Albertsons is focused on simplifying its organization and reducing expenses to help reinvest in more customer facing initiatives.

Albertsons Southern California Division president Dan Sanders said a decision of this nature is never easy, but it is the necessary step for the firm to take to help improve its business and accelerate turnaround.

"Our goal is to more effectively serve the marketplace by scheduling associates more appropriately to serve customers at the times they shop," Sanders added.

The move to reduce workforce is expected to directly impact a small number of positions at any specific store location.

Albertsons said it will work with the union to ensure a smooth transition for affected associates based on the collective bargaining agreement.

Founded in 1939, Albertsons currently operates 445 Albertsons and Lucky supermarkets in Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Southern California, Southern Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
